For many years rumours have hinted at the possibility of Steam coming to the Linux platform, and now it has been officially declared that there will be such a port.
Valve’s co-founder and CEO Gabe Newell has reportedly stated that he has been a supporter of the Linux platform for a considerable amount of time, and there has been photographs of Left 4 Dead 2 running natively alongside a Steam client, on what seems to be an Ubuntu 11.10 setup. What’s exciting about this? It’s Gabe’s computer.
Prior to this our open-source gaming brethren have had to cope with running the WIndows version using the WINE APi. However this new client is completely native, and we can expect both Steam and the Source Engine on Linux very soon.
However just because they have had success with Left 4 Dead 2 does not mean that success is guaranteed. Valve will now be working tirelessly on preparing their other Source-based games, such as Counter-Strike: Source and Team Fortress 2 to the new operating system.
If anyone knows Valve like we do, you will be familiar with the concept of ‘Valve time’. Valve as a company are notorious for failing to meet deadlines, or moreover failing to release anything at all – as there’s no specific date announced, we can only have our fingers crossed that everything falls through.

Everything’s been fairly stagnant here on the website, we’ve been busy. On the other hand the stream has been absolutely buzzing with activity.

Providing everything goes smoothly, we’ll be changing web hosts tomorrow. This does mean that there will be some inevitable downtime. Any content that was going to be uploaded and shown today (Game of the Week, gaming news, etc.) have been postponed briefly as a result. The website should be back up Saturday afternoon (GMT) depending on how long it takes for the behind the scenes changeover.
The benefits will be very noticeable. New features will come as a result of the new hosting, which are little surprises you can look forward to. In addition to increases in website stability and speed – so the website won’t have any of them scary random error messages or just generally be slow as poo on wheels. You get the idea.
We’ll keep you informed. If the website goes down, you know where to look. @classicville on Twitter or our Facebook page are the best places to go.

He’s not dead. We’re just kidding.
But his company might as well be. The stores are still open but the company’s in the worst state it could possibly be in. All major developers have practically pulled out in stores leaving them floating ducks trying to sell off secondhand video games. The online store’s still selling stuff, but for how much longer?
The company’s in a state of what you might call, interim moratorium. Or administration. Has the new age of getting your games through digital distribution services, such as Steam and PlayStation Store thrown traditional gaming dedicated stores over the edge? You be the judge. Dark times for the world of the retail gamer.
I on the other hand, look forward to being able to snag last minute secondhand bargains on any PC, PlayStation 2 and 3 titles they might have hanging around.

Not that anything to do with a cake is a lie, of course. Yesterday was James’ birthday! Why am I posting this the day after? Because we were too busy partying it up the day before? No! James doesn’t get breaks. I’m an amazing slave driver.
I digress. He’s the beautiful age of eighteen now and deserves some much needed love and cuddles. Nice comments too. Any cake donations I’ll take… personal responsibility for.

An 8-bit wonder that covers possibly every genre of retro gaming, from driving, to shooting, to even platforming and swimming, as well as total free roam mode. There’s an unfathomable amount of depth. The game is going to be released in May for PlayStation 3, PlayStation Vita, Xbox 360, WiiWare and Steam, as well as DRM-Free release on PC.

Funky fresh.
SEGA has a habit of spamming the Steam store with their past catalogue of Mega-Drive(Genesis) titles. Which in a way isn’t entirely a bad thing.
What we are pleased to find out, is that Toejam and Earl have found their groovy way legally over to the PC plaform. (So that rules out emulators y’all)
They cost £3.99 each (roughly €4.79 or $6.32) and embed tidily into SEGA’s Genesis & Mega-Drive Classics app on Steam. So you’ve got easy access to all your retro hits. By each we mean the original game and the sequel. We’re not gonna talk about the version that came out on Xbox a few decades later…
